'Corporate
Welfare' for Liquor Industry
The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. (DISCUS) has received
a $62,000 federal grant to promote liquor sales overseas, the Houston
Chronicle reported July 26.
The grant from the Agriculture Department is a first for DISCUS,
a trade association that represents the liquor industry. Spirits
made from grain can be promoted using the money.
Aileen Roder, a spokesperson for Taxpayers for Commonsense, called
the grant "corporate welfare for the liquor lobby."
