Study Examines Alcohol's Effect on Metabolism

The Children's Hospital Research Institute in Arkansas has received a new $1.63 million grant to examine alcohol's metabolic effect, the Associated Press reported Aug. 26.

"Alcohol is part of most people's diets, whether they have a drink every other day or whether they drink to excess. But, alcohol is still a drug, and we need to understand the short and long-term effects it has on our bodies," said Dr. Thomas Badger, one of the study's leaders.

The research project, which began 15 years ago, is examining how alcohol consumption turns genes on or off and how it may impact diets.

The National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse grant will fund the study for the next five years.
