County
Set to Ban Alcohol Vapor Machines
Suffolk County, N.Y., is poised to become the first in the country
to pass a law making it illegal to sell, buy, or use "alcohol
without liquid" (AWOL) machines, New York radio station 1010
WINS reported Sept. 28.
The Suffolk County legislature unanimously passed a measure that
bans machines that allow customers to inhale alcohol through their
nose or mouth.
AWOL machines combine alcohol with pressurized oxygen to make a
mist that can be inhaled. AWOL's manufacturer says the device provides
users with a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate way to achieve a euphoric
feeling without a hangover.
Kevin Morse, president of Spirit Partners of Greensboro, N.C.,
which distributes and markets the AWOL machines in the United States,
said the device is "a fun new way for adults to enjoy alcohol
in a responsible manner."
But opponents argue that AWOL machines will lead to more drunk
driving, underage drinking, and other alcohol misuse.
Before the bill becomes law, it must be signed by County Executive
Steve Levy. Levy supports the measure, and is expected to sign it
within the week.
